Taking
things to the next level: Designing and
implementing Change in my classroom.
What?
Brave New World.
Ethics Class.
Connecting important issues in the story with those of students own
lives.
Why?
To encourage students to be active in their learning process and become
increasingly more responsible for their own learning.
To use English to bring some of the big issues already affecting students lives, and which will do so more and more as soon as they finish their formal education, into my classroom.
To encourage real, authentic dialogue.
To develop critical thinking skills
To develop enquiry skills (specifically by working with What, Why and How)
To further incorporate technology into my classroom by bringing videos and webquests which had been conscienciously chosen and are relevant and attainable for students in a well scaffolded way.
To work in mixed groups as often as possible.
To help ensure the learning is more student than teacher centered.
To enrich the learning experience for all involved as well as to reach measureable results.

How?
Through collaboration, by sharing and encouraging a real appreciation of
diversity in the classroom.
By involving students as far as possible in the direction their learning
would take.
By taking calculated risks as a teacher as to what would work, how and
why.
By taking advantage of the huge range of resources already available
online.
By providing the time and spaces for students to think.
By working from student’s previous knowledge.
By posing these questions as a starting point:
“What are the
main issues raised by Huxley in Brave New World?”
“What is
individualism?”
“How does
Huxley present the individual in Brave New World, what’s his/her role?”
“What does
individualism mean for me today?”
“Why is it
important not to always follow the crowd?”
By facilitating the reproduction of authentic language in the communication activities.
With a scaffolded investigation and appreciation of this online video:http://www.sparknotes.com/sparknotes/video/brave-new-world
By supporting students in a hands on way, as and when necessary, to ensure they didn’t get stuck.
By encouraging students to stretch their current abilities.
Through guided reflection after activities e.g.
“Two things I liked and one thing I think you could improve…”
Through the use of continuous formative assessment.
By suggesting they include their individual essay in their ethics portfolio.
Through the use of rubrics for self and peer assessment.
